Matthysse sparks Dallas; Soto Karass shocks Aydin; Charlo twins shine

Matthysse showed his power again against Dallas Jr
By Peter Wells (@boxingpeter): Last night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Lucas Matthysse sent out another frightful message to the rest of the Light Welterweight division. Mike Dallas Jr may have been a late replacement for Hank Lundy but he was still a talented fighter who wouldn't be denied easily. To add to that the power Matthysse showed in one monster punch was scary and must have every top 10 Light Welter shaking in their boots.

Although Dallas Jr never had a chance to really test the Argentinian, he did have early success before the concussive punch. He used his reach well, keeping Matthysse on the outside before tying Matthysse up on the inside.

Dallas good start was undone when he left himself open and Matthysse severely punished him, knocking him out cold before he hit the canvas. Dallas was thankfully okay and must now think carefully about his next step. As for Matthysse he'll be waiting on the winning of next month’s clash between Danny Garcia and Zab Judah. If Danny wins then the fans could be treated to a tasty affair between the two leading 140lbs fighters.

After a tight points defeat at the hands of Robert Guerrero, Selcuk Aydin hoped that he would bounce back under new trainer, Adam Booth against tough Mexican, Jesus Soto Karass. Instead the Turkish fighter was left with his second defeat of his career after a convincing defeat (although one judge scored the fight a draw).

Soto Karass was also coming back from defeat at the hands of Marcos Maidana in a barnburner last year. Karass built on the positive work he did against Maidana and  took control after the first round, firing everything off a good jab which Aydin just couldn’t match. Aydin had mild success with the overhand right, but was clearly outboxed until Aydin came on strong in rounds 8-10.

Double Trouble Jermall (left) and Jermell (right) both shone on last nights undercard
Karass was rightly declared the winner and although he doesn't quite have a huge case to merit a shot at a world title there are plenty of fights out there for him to earn himself a shot. Andre Berto, Josesito Lopez or Victor Ortiz would certainly fit the bill.

Finally twins Jermell 20-0(10) and Jermall Charlo 11-0(7) both impressed in their respective Light Middleweight contests. Jermall dominated the tough Josh Williams before Williams retired after 5 one-sided rounds. Jermell then displayed patience and power in knocking Harry Joe Yorgey down 3 imes on route to an 8th round stoppage. Both displayed similar talents, leading behind a sharp jab and both have power in the straight right hand. The Charlo twins also displayed impressive footwork and both look like forces to be reconed with in the future.
